HIGHLIGHTS OF THE JULY 3RD, 2007 COUNCIL MEETING

COMMITTEES
ENVIRONMENT
Within the framework of the revitalization of shorelines, the residents who ordered plants via the municipality received their orders on June 9th. Due to its success, citizens will be offered the possibility to place another order for plants at the end of the summer.
We remind you that a workshop entitled “Six ways to compost at home” will be held at the Town Hall on July 24th at 7 p.m.
RECREATION
The committee is planning a series of conferences and lectures. A request for a writing room within the “Correspondances Eastman” project was not approved for 2007.
INFRASTRUCTURE
The committee accepted the municipal inspector’s calendar of summer maintenance for municipal roads. The purchase of recreational equipment for the Terrio road park is foreseen. Amendments to the specifications for the renewal of the garbage contract were discussed. It was decided that the entire council should take part in these discussions due to the complexity of the problems involved in improving the service.
PRINCIPAL RESOLUTIONS
Missisquoi Valley Ecotourism project: The council confirmed by resolution its intention to creat river access points on DuRocher road as well as at the intersection of Route Missisquoi and Nicholas-Austin Road and to designate East River Road as a « Scenic Road”. As concerns the « Eastern Townships Trails » dossier, Council resolved to create a one year pilot project whereby the municipality, twice a year during 15 day periods, would offer discounts to its residents wishing to buy memberships. The municipality would contribute 10$ toward family memberships and 5$ for individual, student or senior citizen memberships.
A resolution was passed approving a 100 $ bursary to young artists, winners at the 2007 Sherbrooke Festival, who participated in the « Jeune Découverte » performance at the auberge Chez la Mère Poule. Council also approved a financial contribution of 697$ to the Memphrémagog Hospital Foundation.
The contract for the resurfacing of Cameron Road was awarded to Construction DJL Inc.
RAPPORT DE LA MAIRESSE
We received a thank you letter from the Holy Trinity Anglican Church for the donation of 100$ towards the repair of the building as well as a request that the Heritage and Culture committee participate in finding a solution for the maintenance and preservation of religious heritage buildings. The Mayor replied that both the municipality and the MRC will be involved in the study.
The municipality received a letter from residents of Fontaine road, along with numerous other complaints, regarding the poor quality of garbage collection services. The municipality is in the process of preparing the specifications for the renewal of the garbage contract and will make the appropriate amendments in order to improve the service.
QUESTIONS
Citizens commented on the letter concerning the problem with garbage collection on Fontaine road.
Citizens requested that the municipality require the updating of existing septic systems. The Mayor responded that our first priority is to complete the inventory in order to identify septic systems which present a source of pollution and to intervene in such cases.
Questions arose regarding the municipality’s attempts to raise the level of Long Pond. The Mayor responded that the municipality is required to respect the conditions imposed by the minister of the environment and suggests that a meeting take place between the residents and representatives of the ministry on this topic.
